begin exploring and developing your collections

      take your time wandering through the archive(s) you’ve selected

      set yourself up for serendipitous discovery ~ look for surprises, curiosities, the unexpected finds; what’s interesting to you?

      take note of what you’re drawn to and why

spend time during our first class choosing five (5) objects/artifacts from among the online collections. your chosen items will start your collection, so take your time wandering, foraging, and searching for these things to seed your collection. choose things that interest you on multiple levels. consider form, narrative potential, the tangents and trajectories that might be possible. where might this seed collection lead?

write a paragraph explaining the idea(s) behind your seed collection, touching on aspects like personal, social, political, material, and cultural connections. describe your relationship to this seed collection and any broader associations you have with it.

    expand your seed collection to 50+ things. 50 is the minimum, but there is no limit to the size of your collection. fill a wall or a table with 50+ printouts of the items in your collection. black-and-white print-outs only (use the free b&w printers on 6th and 8th floors).

      size: big enough for people to see from a few feet away!

    continue your ideation ~ your 50+ prints must be accompanied by your writing as well as a list of keywords that help define your collection and describe its logic. your writing needs to present your logic/thinking. how did you make your selections? what was the rationale?

      be sure you understand your own thinking and please try to avoid any ai at this stage. better to authentically present your thinking in this early phase especially.

    bring markers, tape, pushpins, post-it notes, string, tracing paper, and/or any other analog tools you would like for working on your collection in class.

    note ~ keep track of where you found each item in your collection, so you can cite your sources later. are.na is a great tool for this.
